Melina Tsalikis
I was born and raised in Miami where my unique sounding last name and fluent Spanish has raised many amused eyebrows. A combination that reflects my Dad’s immigration from Greece and my mom’s Cuban/Dominican heritage. Having spent most of my life surrounded by a large consistent family circle, sudden changes in 2022 made my living situation feel terribly unfamiliar. Family dynamics shifted and my house began falling into various states of disrepair. Things changed all around me but at the same time living as an adult in my childhood home felt stagnant, like nothing had changed at all.
The materials for my work are sourced from my home. The objects range from items unused for years to well-worn things ready to be discarded. I combine these elements with materials and processes that are not often associated with each other, let alone everyday household things.
Examples include draping used comforters on a structure of hand-woven bamboo sourced from my dad’s garden or casting a concrete paver from my driveway in plaster then methodically tying each new paver together with pink embroidery floss. I liken the meticulous and repetitive labor that goes into each piece to the emotional and physical labor expected from the eldest daughter in an immigrant household. Sound also plays an important role in my work. The pieces I make are fueled by the notion that sensory information holds the power to invoke potent memories and emotions.
By including sound, I introduce a sensation to my work that viewers can use to reflect on their own experiences.
